Use the information below to find trusted advice about common sleep problems, including insomnia and snoring.
Speak to a GP if:
- you have had trouble sleeping for months
- sleep problems are affecting your daily life or making it hard to cope
- changing your sleeping habits has not helped
- snoring is having a big impact on you or your partner
- you feel very sleepy during the day
- your breathing stops and starts while you sleep, or you make gasping or choking noises
These symptoms may need further assessment, especially if sleep apnoea is possible.

Things that may help you sleep better
- go to bed and wake up at the same time every day
- relax for at least 1 hour before bed
- keep your bedroom dark, quiet and comfortable
- exercise regularly during the day
- avoid alcohol, smoking, tea or coffee close to bedtime
- avoid large meals late at night
- avoid screens, such as phones or tablets, just before bed
- do not drive if you feel sleepy
